Matthew Chalmers is a professor in the School of Computing Science at the University of Glasgow. After his PhD, he worked in industrial labs in Cambridge (Xerox) and Zurich (UBS). A short fellowship at U. Hokkaido then preceded his move to U. Glasgow at the end of 1999. His work has been varied, ranging through data visualisation and analytics, data ethics and ethical systems design, and mobile and ubiquitous computing. He borrows from philosophy, biology and other disciplines to feed into the design and theory of such systems. He was the lead of a network of ~35 research projects, spread across ~25 UK universities, and running from 2018 to 2022. The projects explored issues in law, art and design, civic trust, healthcare, environmentalism, education and beyond, but were all linked by Human Data Interaction, a conceptual framework for ethical system design.
