Dr John Thomson

John is Associate Clinical Director of NHS Scotland’s National Centre for Sustainable Delivery with a portfolio that includes diagnostics, data and the accelerated national innovation adoption (ANIA) pathway. His clinical practice is as a Consultant Gastroenterologist in Aberdeen. He has a research background in bioinformatics having undertaken his PhD between Aberdeen University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a Scottish Quality and Safety Fellow and for more than 10 years has been a digital health leader across numerous local, regional and national programs. He is passionate about creating a sustainable health and social care system as part of a wider sustainable global society. He believes digital workflow innovation needs to be integrated into everyday clinical practice with technology as a core component of clinical interactions. He strives to achieve this through a focus on digitally enabled service redesign, citizen focussed digital services and supporting development of a data utilisation infrastructure that will facilitate innovation, advances in clinical research and care, and ultimately drive sustainable improvements in global population health.
