Dr Shane Sheehan

Shane is a researcher and lecturer in Data Visualization at the University of Edinburgh Medical School, Usher Institute. He runs mosaiclabs.work, a technology, design, and AI consultancy focused on cutting-edge applications of open models for understandable, safe, and private AI data processing.

His research spans electrical engineering, computer science, and applied machine learning, with particular experience developing and applying AI and NLP models focused on explainability, interpretability, and making complex systems accessible to diverse audiences. As a design researcher, he explores how semiotics, metaphor, and cultural context influence the way data and models are represented and understood, particularly in health and environmental domains.

He is currently co-developing voice-first AI documentation tools with Abbotsford Care, designing ethical AI systems for frontline care settings in Scotland.
