As a new graduate in a recession, it was difficult for Jennifer Higgins and husband Mark to buy their first home. Jennifer’s entrepreneurial degree and her family’s 30-year history in construction, led her to design and build a 1 bedroom modular home for her and her husband which they moved into at the bottom of her parents’ garden. Immediately Jennifer saw the benefits of this method and launched The Wee House Company with her father in 2013, delivering modular homes to rural locations such as Highlands and Western Isles where traditional construction can be challenging. Since then, the company has grown rapidly and now operates a 17,000m2 manufacturing facility in Ayrshire, completing projects across the UK. In recent years the company has diversified, developing their Connect Modular Division, to deliver modular affordable housing for local authorities and housing associations. The company’s homes are 90% complete before leaving the factory, facilitating a significantly shorter build programme and earlier occupancy. Modular construction offers many advantages over traditional building, with improvements in quality and waste reduction leading to significantly more sustainable homes.
