Born in Oxford, brought up in Hampshire. Studied Zoology/Chemistry then Biochemistry at London University followed by a PhD in Fish Physiology at St Andrews. Career spent as a neurophysiologist, mostly at Edinburgh University. Took up tennis coaching on retirement from the university.
