Dr Salma ElSayed is a Lecturer in Computer Science at Abertay University, bringing over 20 years of academic and research expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision. Recognised as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Salma is deeply committed to excellence in teaching and professional development, holding an accredited higher education teaching qualification from different institutes.
Salma has been instrumental in shaping the curriculum at Abertay and enhancing the student experience, particularly with artificial intelligence influenced programmes. Her innovative approach to pedagogy incorporates cutting-edge content, industry-aligned standards, and active learning methodologies, significantly improving student engagement and outcomes.
Recognised in the fields of AI and computer science, Salma actively contributes to the global academic community through memberships in prominent associations including ACM, IEEE, and SICSA. She is a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusivity, actively participating in initiatives that promote STEM education, particularly for underrepresented groups. Salma is also interested in the work of Scotland’s AI Alliance, where she contributes to shaping policies that guide the ethical and effective use of AI.
Salma’s research expertise includes computer vision, AI, and Human-Computer Interaction. Some of her current work in affective computing explores multi-modal emotion modelling for emerging technologies. She is also working in the design of emotionally aware virtual agents, including game characters and conversational agents, and how classic affective models can be incorporated into their architecture. This recently extended to social robots and their use with user-centred affective design in health and well-being.
