In May 2024, the Scottish Government published a 2024 to 2025 update to the national digital health and care strategy’s delivery plan. A key element of this update was to improve digital services to alleviate pressure on healthcare services and boards and allow patients to manage their treatment safely and independently.

This panel will focus on what technological solutions are available, and how they can help people manage their conditions at home where possible, to reduce the number of appointments and ease pressure on the NHS.

Communication and communication systems sit at the heart of primary care technology. They should improve the quality of care through enhancing the patient’s experience of services and enable GP's to become more efficient to cope with patient demand. Technologies including cloud-based telephony, the NHS app, and Digital Front Door, all contribute to removing the 8-9am GP rush and work to improve communication between primary care professionals and patients.

We’ll explore:

- Where chatbots, apps, and new technologies are being used successfully
- Barriers to adoption, such as digital skills and funding
- The opportunities and challenges of digital technologies

Prevention and early identification are key to reducing pressure on Scottish health and care providers. Emerging technologies have the potential to provide patients with early treatment which mitigates potential issues further down the line.

In this session, panellists will explore:

- How systems like Scottish Patients at Risk of Readmission and Admission version 4 (SPARRAv4) can help improve hospital admission accuracy and reduce strain
- The need to prevent anxiety and depression in older people and how existing technologies can enable this
- The importance of monitoring day-to-day activities to pinpoint and detect early signs of illnesses, including dementia and UTIs

In this Connecting the Dots session we will cover:

· Scotland’s Digital Mental Health Innovation Cluster (DMHIC) - introduction to role of cluster - connectivity, coordinating innovation and collaboration

· DMHIC | DHI collaboration with The Global Health Connector - ECHAlliance for World Mental Health Day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ys-9Qmww-vo

An annual disaster recovery test prepares you for a 1 in 10 million event, like a fire or flood in a data centre. These tests typically focus on failing over from one data centre to another. But cyber attacks, especially ransomware, are far more likely—a 1 in 50 chance. And unlike natural disasters, ransomware can compromise all your data, even if it’s replicated elsewhere.

In this talk we will look at this threat and learn how to implement a comprehensive cyber resilience and disaster recovery strategy for patient data. We will then explore the ability to run AI locally on-premise with cyber resilient hardware, providing a complete suite of AI tooling that is typically only available in the cloud, allowing the NHS to use AI with potentially sensitive data, for inference, training, and fine-tuning, without the data ever leaving the building or being used to train other models.

Improving cyber security in healthcare is critical now more than ever before. Following the attack on NHS Dumfries and Galloway, healthcare providers must take action to protect and preserve their data. But how can this be done effectively and cheaply?

The discussion will focus on:

- What the development of a Digital Health and Care Cyber Security Action plan by the Scottish Government and Cyber Centre of Excellence means for the sector
- How organisations and health boards can learn from previous cyber attacks
- What organisations can do to prevent breaches in future

AI is already supporting healthcare in Scotland through diagnosing conditions, delivery of radiotherapy, and speech recognition, though still isn’t commonplace. Scotland has the potential to become a leading voice in using AI in healthcare.

Join this panel to explore:

- Existing challenges of AI in healthcare including funding and data sources
- Where AI is being used successfully within health, housing, and social care
- How Scotland can place itself at the forefront of AI development

The Scottish government published an update on the Data Strategy for Health and Social Care in April 2024, highlighting that whilst there has been significant progress, there is still plenty of work required to achieve the vision and ambition of the Strategy.

Two years on from its launch in 2023, our panellists will consider what has improved in the collection, interpretation, and sharing of data, and what progress is most urgently required to improve data sharing and interoperability.

- Enables live data interactions, ensuring up-to-date information flow and active care management
- Utilises openEHR standard to ensure data consistency, quality, and interoperability across healthcare systems
- Provides immediate access to patient data, ensuring timely and informed clinical decisions
- Puts the system in the hands of care professionals and avoids vendor lock-in

Join us for the #DigiInventors Challenge 2024 Secondary School Edition Awards Ceremony where we celebrate the students and their winning idea.

The #DigiInventors Challenge is an initiative created by the Digital Health & Care Innovation Centre and delivered with the support of their partners: City of Glasgow College, Heriot-Watt University Dubai, dressCode, and (for 2024) Scottish Hockey.

The initiative (which is now in its 8th year) aims to inspire and empower young people in primary and secondary schools across Scotland and the UAE to identify and develop entrepreneurial and digital skills while raising awareness of career opportunities in the digital health and care sector.

This year’s Secondary School Challenge tasked students with developing an idea for how digital technology and/or e-gaming can be used to re-invent the game of field hockey to inspire increased physical activity, participation, and well-being of our young people. Teams could earn extra points if their idea had a positive environmental impact and supported efforts to reach net carbon zero.

Much of what we now take for granted in healthcare would have been unimaginable a decade ago. The next generation of healthcare workers have access to a continuously developing library of technologies. Training methods are constantly diversifying and new technologies are available more widely to build the skills of the workforce and provide realistic and bespoke training. Join us to explore examples of these technologies and what opportunities lie in the future.
